CHAPTER 6

HUG A TREE

After the players left the building on Monday, preparation for the Chicago game began in earnest. We had a twenty-four-hour rule— win or lose, we would focus on the previous opponent for no more than twenty-four hours after the game. Then we would move on to the next opponent. So on Monday evening, I sat down with a fresh cup of coffee and began to draft my scouting report on the Bears.

In practices, the team would spend the next four days concentrating on the basics: tackling and catching. While I tried to concentrate on doing my job, it was getting harder and harder to suppress the worry that I wouldn’t make the plane. Nate, my best source of information on the inside, was tight-lipped. I strolled into his office on Wednesday morning.

“So, Nate, you think I’m going to make the plane?”

He stared at me. “Hey, man, I got all sorts of stuff going on right now. I got no clue. Let’s see what Carl decides.”

“When do you think we will know?” I asked.

“I would say late tomorrow, early Friday. By then, you should have an answer.”

I went straight to my laptop to send an email to my law school buddy, Chris Richardson, who was practicing in Chicago. I was fairly certain he would let me crash if I needed a place to stay, but I didn’t want to ask too late.

Chris—

I hope all is going well, big dog. All is good here, other than the fact that we’re 0–1. How’s firm life?

Hey man, I may need a favor from you . . . looks like I may need a place to crash this weekend in Chicago. Any chance I can use your couch for Saturday night? I don’t snore.—DKR
